Editing a quote — lines, margin, and what changes after signing
Work the line grid — add, price, discount and delete lines, set margin, tax and contingency, tighten the contract text — and know exactly what still changes after the quote is sent, and what stops changing once the client signs.
Editing a quote
Open Quotes, then the quote itself (/quotes/{id}). A draft is an ordinary working
document — lines, prices and wording all move until a client signs it. Two moments
change the rules: sending and signing.
The line grid
On a desktop the grid is a dense spreadsheet (Trade, Description, Type, Tier, Qty,
Unit, Cost, Margin %, Total, Opt); on a phone the same lines become stacked cards with
quantity steppers, but the same save rules.
| Column | What it does |
|---|---|
| Description & Quick Search | Typeahead over the catalog; a suggestion fills the unit and cost |
| Type | Material, labor, subcontractor or plant — it decides what material tax lands on |
| Tier | The package it belongs to (All, or Good / Better / Best) |
| Qty, Unit, Cost | The take-off figures |
| Margin % | Only for a line that should differ from the global setting |
| Opt | An optional client add-on: out of the base total, offered as an upgrade |
| Trash | Deletes the line |
Add, price and delete lines
- Press + Row above the grid (Add line on a phone). A new line starts at
quantity 1, unit each, cost 0, at your global margin. - Type the description and pick a suggestion if one matches — the unit and cost fill
from your catalog: a shortcut, not a commitment. - Enter the quantity, confirm the unit, set the cost, adjust Margin %
only where it deserves to differ, and tag the line to a package if you offer
Good / Better / Best. - Trash removes a line and saves straight away; a refused delete says "Delete
failed: …" rather than keeping the line quietly.
For room-by-room jobs the room cards also offer an Assembly button, which appends
calculated lines (with waste) as ordinary editable lines.
The money controls
- Global Gross Margin Controller — one slider (0–50%) for every line at once; a
line's own margin still wins. Dip under your workspace minimum and it warns "Margin is
below your minimum threshold of X%."
(Gross Margin & Contingency) - Taxes & Surcharges (behind View) — Material Tax % on the post-waste
material total only (labor and subcontractors stay tax-exempt), plus a Permit &
Municipal Fee in dollars. - Contingency Buffer — 0, 5, 10, 15 or 20 percent, as a visible reserve on the
proposal or hidden inside the line items. - Contract wording — Standard Scope Exclusions and Warranty & Guarantee, each
with its own Save button; both render on the client's page and the PDF. A per-job override
replaces the master contract when the wording must differ. - Adjuster Notes & Scope Remarks — kept separate from your scope, printed only when
Include adjuster notes & remarks in the exported PDF is ticked.
Saving
Line edits save about 0.6 seconds after you stop typing; tax, permit fee and adjuster
notes save half a second after they change. Save Quote forces a write, and
Activity Log (More Actions) records line, margin and status changes, so unexplained
prices have an answer.
Status: draft, sent, signed
The status select offers Draft, Sent and Signed, and the quote flips to Sent
when you email or share it. A sent quote is not frozen — the client holds a link to the
current version, so re-send after a change.
After signing: locked, and change orders
Signing is the line. Every edit is refused with "This quote has been accepted and
signed — it can no longer be edited"; the builder says "Signed: this quote is
locked", hides Save and disables the status select.
Instead, use Add change order (banner or More Actions). That creates CO1
(CO2, CO3…), a linked draft with its own lines, sign-off link and totals, while the
signed proposal stays as it was; the header reads Base Contract + Change Order =
Revised. Change orders exist only on signed quotes, and money collected is a
separate ledger — marking a draw paid never unlocks the quote
(Getting Paid by Clients).
